Italian Prune Plums Why you will love this easy summer plum cake Whenever I see them, I make sure to stock up to make this delicious cake. They make their appearance in late summer and early fall for a few weeks. They are sometimes a rare find in supermarkets, as their season is quite short. When cooked, Italian plums impart a sweet jammy consistency that turns the prettiest hue of pink when their juices are released. This cake uses Italian plums, also called Italian prune plums or European plums. They look different than the commercial plums available in supermarkets here in the United States. Italian plums have an oblong shape, and their skins are more cloudy than shiny. While the original is delicious, I have adapted it over the years by adding almond flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, lemon zest, and my secret ingredient (keep reading to find out). This one stood out since it was the first time I had heard of Italian plums. I then had the pleasure of sifting (no pun intended) through all of them when the party was over. My mom had guests write their favorite recipes on recipe cards (remember those?). I was first inspired to make this cake after being gifted the Original Plum Torte recipe by Marian Burros, at my bridal shower. ![]() Arthur was named president of the new company. To handle the success of the mail order operation, a new company-Spiegel, May, Stern, and Company-was formed, allowing the Spiegel House Furnishings Company to devote its limited resources to conventional retailing, rather than assume the debts associated with building up the mail order segment. In 1906, Spiegel's mail-order sales were near $1 million. The new service was reflected by the addition of a word to the company motto, which began to read: "We Trust the People-Everywhere!" This and the fact they did not charge interest on extended credit helped increase their business substantially. After a couple of years of lobbying, Arthur convinced the company hierarchy to open a mail-order department, and in 1905, Spiegel became the first company to offer credit through the mail. In 1903, Joseph Spiegel's third son, Arthur, entered the business with a plan to develop mail-order operations for Spiegel. The company's slogan-"We Trust the People!"-reflected its emphasis on credit merchandising. Another South Side branch went into operation three years later. The new Spiegel was more successful, and in 1898 a branch store was opened on Chicago's South Side. The decision to offer installment plans, and the timing of the decision, made possible Spiegel's expansion over the next several decades. The principal difference was that the new company, like many others in the furniture business, sold on credit. At Modie Spiegel's urging, the company reinvented itself as Spiegel House Furnishings Company of Chicago in 1893. With debts mounting, the company went bankrupt. By 1892, however, the business had taken a turn for the worse, as many customers were slow to pay for their purchases. Because a mail order system did not yet exist, the catalogs served instead to lure people into the downtown store. The catalogs were made available to potential customers who lived outside the city. Spiegel issued its first catalogs in 1888. Joseph Spiegel's two oldest sons, Modie Spiegel and Sidney Spiegel, were brought into the business during this time. In 1885 Spiegel began running regular advertisements in several Chicago newspapers, and the following year the company moved to a larger building on State Street. After the fire, Joseph Spiegel and a partner named Jacob Cahn rebuilt the business, and by 1874 the company was prospering again under the leadership of the two men. ![]() In 1871, however, the Great Chicago Fire destroyed most of the area's business district, including the Spiegel store. With Liebenstein's assistance, Joseph Spiegel opened J. Spiegel and Company, a small home furnishings retail operation located on Wabash Avenue in Chicago's loop. After spending the final few months of the Civil War in a Confederate prison camp, Joseph Spiegel settled in Chicago, where his brother-in-law, Henry Liebenstein, ran a furniture business. In 2019, the company website was removed without notice and the company ceased to operate.įor the first 100 years of its history, Spiegel was primarily a family business. I posted as much on Twitter that play carried the same energy that a parent carries with their child when they want to prove, just once, that they can absolutely dominate physically, if they choose to. Jrue blocked Smart clean, and there was nothing he could do about it. We have the ostensible “best defender in the league” getting directly and fiercely shut down by one of his peers, and in a fashion that leaves very little gray area to endlessly litigate over social media. So when Smart gets absolutely blindsided by Holiday – who placed 8th in the DPOY balloting – on a baseline drive to the bucket and has the ball whipped off of his torso and out of bounds, it tastes pretty sweet. We might detest his methods, but Smart gets results that helps his team more often than not, and the hometown Boston crowd loves him for it. All along though, Smart made his impact felt on defense, hounding the Bucks’ ball-handlers and endlessly inserting himself into the action to muck up Milwaukee’s already-mucky offense. In Games 1 and 3 (he sat out for Game 2 with a minor leg injury), Smart was a relative minus on offense for Boston, but he came through in a big way in Game 4 and maintained a respectable output in Game 5. The winner of the 2021-22 Defensive Player of the Year award, chosen by a modest margin and riding the wave of an arguably manufactured media “debate” about the selection criteria and pitting “bigs” against “smalls,” has played pretty well in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. Notable highlights in their decades-long feud include the ALCS from the late 1970s and early 2000s.If Mariano Rivera is going to get back to Fenway Park, the Yankees will have to be one of the AL's wild card teams. From Joe DiMaggio to Ted Williams, Derek Jeter to David Ortiz, both teams saw a number of remarkable stars face off against one another throughout the years. In the 86 years that followed, the Red Sox would never win another World Series, while the Yankees would go on to win 26.Īs the Yankees flourished and the Red Sox floundered, relations between the teams and their respective fan bases grew especially antagonistic. They went through heated spells when both the Yankees and the Red Sox were at their strongest, competing bitterly for the American League Championship and the right to advance to the World Series. The earliest tension between the Yankees and the Red Sox can be traced back to when Babe Ruth was traded from Boston to New York in 1919, beginning the notorious (or celebrated) “Curse of the Bambino.” With Ruth’s arrival to the Yankees came an extraordinary reversal of fortunes which saw the Red Sox enter a decades-long losing spell and the beginning of the Yankee dynasty as we know it. The Yankees-Red Sox rivalry is widely considered the most dramatic and storied in all of baseball, as well as one of the most famous in the sports world at large. Saints better hope the Buccaneers don’t get a chance to run the score up in the future The Walking Dead is not ending it’s forking off into three (or possibly more) different series. In other words, this episode was less about working toward the end of The Walking Dead and more about setting up the spin-offs. When The Walking Dead returned for the third part of its tenth season, Maggie Rhee (Lauren Cohan) had someone special with her: Her son Hershel Rhee, whos named after his grandfather. ![]() They’re never seen again.” That certainly describes France, where Daryl’s spin-off will be set next season. In fact, Connie - Daryl’s potential love interest - was also abducted and - before she was rescued - was supposed to be taken to a place called “Designation two,” which is “somewhere far away. If searching for their kids is the prompt for the spin-off, it means that the end of The Walking Dead is unlikely to bring resolution to the series. Annie, likewise, is separated from Negan and placed elsewhere. The kids, however, have been separated from their parents and placed in an unknown location. Negan and Ezekiel (among others) work in the labor camp, while several others - Maggie, Carol, Gabriel, Rosita, and Daryl - are trying to find their friends and rescue them from the camp. That brings us back to The Walking Dead, where Alexandria has been turned into a labor camp by the Commonwealth. Maggie and Negan may respect each other on The Walking Dead, but they do not like each other, and the only reason I imagine they would agree to work together is to save their kids. Most likely, however, Hershel Rhee and Annie (and/or Negan’s kid) will be the impetus for Dead City. That would be a terrible possibility, because I cannot imagine The Walking Dead would be cruel enough to kill off the son of a character whose death led to a revolt among millions of viewers. ![]() There are a number of possible reasons why Annie and Hershel aren’t in the new series, but one possible explanation is that they are dead. What’s interesting about those images is who are not in them: Negan’s wife, Annie, and their (unborn child) and Maggie and the late Glenn’s son, Hershel Rhee. Glenn wears a long-sleeved undershirt, pants, and boots which is a great outfit for his position as a gatherer of resources. A few images from the spin-off have already been released, showing off the urban setting. Speaking of spin-offs: We know that Lauren Cohan’s Maggie and Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Negan have a spin-off coming next year set in New York City called The Walking Dead: Dead City. AMC was so desperate to create some enthusiasm for The Walking Dead universe that they had to announce the spin-offs immediately, which spoils the final season. There is zero tension when viewers know - because spin-offs have already been greenlit and begun production - that certain characters will survive the series. The episode is basically a shoot-out involving almost entirely characters with foot-thick plot armor. ![]() There are now three episodes of The Walking Dead remaining, and you’d think that more would happen in a the-fourth-to-last episode of an 11-season series.
